Rosehip has been popular for its healing and nurturing properties since the Stone Age, but the beauty industry has truly unlocked the potential of this amazing ingredient. Rosehip can benefit everything, from joint health to skin clearness, and is fast becoming a staple ingredient, particularly in organic and natural beauty products. But how exactly can rosehip benefit you?
Rosehip is the fruit of a Wild Dog Rose, harvested in late summer through Autumn and grown predominately in Chile. The plant bears a beautiful, fragrant flower that eventually fall off, leaving the hip. The fruit is usually a bright orange/red colour, but can also be dark purple/black depending on the species. Due to its colour, rosehip can change the colour of a product naturally to an attractive yellowy orange shade, without the use of fake dyes.
Rosehip is high in vitamin C & A, is a natural diuretic & laxative, can prevent infections, is an excellent immune system booster, and is high in anti-oxidants. In fact, rosehip has far more nutritious value than oranges, containing 50% more vitamin C.
Rosehip can be made into jams, marmalades, jelly, syrups, soups, drinks, breads, and wines, making it a very universal ingredient; it can also be taken as an herbal tea. Some people even eat the fruit raw, but you have to do this carefully as the fruit contains little hairs that are used for itching powder!
In beauty, rosehip is used to treat a number of skin ailments. It has the amazing ability to regenerate new skin cells, making it great for treating scars, acne, and burns. Rosehip helps to hydrate the skin despite being an astringent, as it helps lock in moisture. If drank, rosehip will help the skin due to its high vitamin A content, which helps keep skin elasticated and nourished – making it perfect for anti-aging products. It can reduce dark spots and help sooth itchy skin, too!
So there you have it! Loads of reasons to try this natural super ingredient... and, fortunately, it's easy to find in products, too! I'm currently using Sukin Moisture Restoring Night Cream, which has rosehip in!
