Kevyn Aucoin's "The Sculpting Contour Powder" is a coveted item of makeup regularly seen in celebrity makeup bags. It's not cheap - at £32, it's a pricey little thing considering you only get 3.1g of product! But is it worth the hype? As a pale gal, I have struggled in the past to find contour colours that don't appear orange on my skin. This is an issue not only for pale people, but for those with a darker complexion too - annoyingly, we aren't as catered for, and the struggle to find suitable shades is nothing short of a ballache.
However! Times are a-changing, and we're noticing a shift in the beauty industry where shades are developing and expanding to suit a range of different shades. Rihanna's brand, Fenty, currently paves the way with a mind-boggling 40 shades to suit every skin tone. And about time, too!
But I digress - today, we're talking contour, specifically that by iconic if not expensive Kevyn Aucoin. Kevyn's brand came onto my radar a few years ago - in fact, it was this very product that I first came across in his range. Blogger/vlogger/wonderwoman Pixiwoo, aka Nic Chapman, used this product in a video - and, on camera, it looked amazing.
Still, it took a few months after to finally convince me to open my purse and INVEST - because spending £32 on a tiny powder is an investment, I'm telling you. Having heard good things, I took the plunge and purchased my own (in the shade "light", naturally).
So what are my thoughts? Having been a Hoola lover for many years, I was impressed by the packaging (it even comes with a teeny mirror), if not disappointed by it's tiny size. But let's put that aside - it's the product colour I was most interested in.
To do my contour, I put on a bronzer first to warm up my complexion, before taking a small brush to create the contour line. As you must by now know, a contour is to give the illusion of higher cheekbones, a sharper jawlines, and a "thinner" face - basically, it's supposed to look like a shadow.
Here is the colour swatched onto the back of my whiter-than-white hand:
As you can see, it's a very VERY nice shade. It's not too warm but not too grey either. It also swatches well, meaning pigment colour is high.
So what are my overall thoughts? If you've got the money, this contour is fab to treat yourself to. I use it a lot and it's barely made a dent in the palette, meaning a little goes a long way.
If you're pale like me and struggle for shades but you're don't want to spend £32, I recommend Hoola by Benefit (which is around £26) for a cheaper option which they also do in 'Lite' for those truly fair complexions. If you're on a budget Sleek Contour Kit in Light is only £6.99 and also comes with a beautiful highlighter shade.
