'Hourglass Skin Illusion Tint' Review - Not What I was Expecting?!

Hey!

Before I start, I just want to apologise for the hideous blue cast on these photos. I was testing a new set of lights which had ridiculous bulbs in and I was unable to edit the blue cast out. Sorry!

I saw a photo of a friend who is a model recently and her skin was glowing. I immediately asked her what she was wearing, and she said the make-up artist had used Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint. You know me - I immediately found and bought it!

Now this is the first product I have tried from Hourglass, and I must say I was very excited because I've heard a lot of good things. My friend's skin looked so beautiful and almost shimmery in her photos, so I was eager to recreate that look myself - I'm obsessed with that sort of skin look at the moment. You know the one I mean - lit from within, dewy but not oily... so stunning!

It comes in a tube applicator, which is fine with me. I got the shade Vanilla cus I be a pale biatch.

Holy crap, this is so expensive. While I wasn't expecting it to be the cheapest of items, I certainly wasn't expecting it to be... £55!!! *passes out*

Holy hell, though, at that price it had better be damn beautiful!

Here's what Hourglass has to say about the product:

"This superior foundation employs advanced technology to promote the appearance of a smoother, firmer and more youthful complexion. Fortified with Hourglass’ Hyaluronan Complex, Illusion® plumps fine lines and wrinkles, tightens the appearance of sagging skin, and delivers an unbelievably luminous glow. UVA/UVB SPF 15 helps protect skin from the sun."

I mean, SPF 15 is no good to anyone but I appreciate the effort, I suppose? It's better than nothing, but don't think it will protect your skin adequately - be sure to always apply a decent SPF before your make-up, kids!

Anywho, I was super excited to try this product - it sounded amazing!

The shade is really nice and exactly what I'd expect from a premium brand (and after spending £55. £55!!! Did I mention this was £55?!?!?!) It isn't too pink or yellow so the tone was just right for me.

Coverage-wise, it's definitely heavier than I was expecting! As it's a 'tint' I thought it would be my-skin-but-better, but it has the coverage of a full-on foundation.

I applied this to freshly prepped skin after my usual skincare routine. I decided not to use primer initially as I wanted to see how it looked without first. I used a Beauty Blender to blend this into the skin.

From the above pictures, it looks like it has pretty great coverage. However...

Up close is a different story. It looks... dry? How is that possible? It's supposed to be a hyaluronic-laden, glowy and luminous - yet it stuck to dry patches I didn't even know I had, and it separated on my skin even as I tried to buff it in. In the above photo, it doesn't look too bad - but if you look closely around my nose and on my chin, you can see the dryness and separation I'm talking about.

Not to be put off - I mean, hardly any foundations work perfectly on my stupid skin - I tried a different method of application. I used a buffing brush, I used my fingers - all had the same results. I tried using a primer underneath - same thing. No matter what I tried, this product failed to deliver the beautiful glow it promised.

I'm absolutely gutted this didn't work for me. It looked SO beautiful on my friend's skin but it looks dull and dry on mine (even though I'm oily/combo!) I have no idea why some foundations refuse to work on my skin, but I'm determined to find a way to make this work for me. It was far too expensive not to use, and I'm sure I can discover the conditions that will make this work for me. Wish me luck and I'll update you once I've figured out the secret!
